The mission of the Monterey Bay Model Yacht Club is to perpetuate:
  • Model yachting skills, including building, tuning, and racing
  • Sportsmanship and fellowship of sailors
  • Our right to have some FUN
  • From March through October, club members vie for position in an annual Club Points Series sailing ODOMs, Soling 50s, Vintage Marbleheads and Wheelers.  Friday evenings from March 13th through October 30th, the "casual" racing is held at Pinto Lake beginning at 2PM for the Skippers Meeting. First race starts at 2:00.
  • The 2016 Club ODOM Series winner was George Ribeiro followed by Dave Misunas and Rich Ludt.  There is a change in the schedule this year:
  • 1st Friday - Pinto Lake, Watsonville - ODOMs
  • 2nd Friday - Pinto Lake, Watsonville - Wheelers
  • 3rd Saturday - Lake El Estero, Monterey - ODOMs (if 3 Wheelers are present they will be scored and count towards the Season Series)
  • 4th Friday - Pinto Lake, Watsonville - ODOMs

  • The 2017 ODOM Marathon was held May 13th at Pinto Lake, Watsonville, CA.  The 2017 winner was Jess Atkinson, congrats!

It was a beautiful day at the Lake with 15 boats on the start line for the 2017 Marathon.  The race was 3 hours, as always, with a left to right start as the course was run counter clockwise for the first 1.5 hours prior to the reversal of course.  Winds were 4-5 MPH and supposed to build to 14-16 MPH, which never happened ... consistently out of the West with variable holes both on the inside and outside legs of the course.  The race was well sailed with only a few dustups, all of which were handled on the water.  The course reversal did not cause the normal carnage, so perhaps we are learning or the quality of the participating sailors is improving.  Many thanks to Ron Saxon for leading the scoring.

The winner was Jess Atkinson, not exactly surprising followed by Larry Grant and John Skinner in third.  Congrats to all and particularly Jess who was about 5' from lapping the fleet on the finish!
    1. First Place - 56 Jess Atkinson - 36 laps
    2. Second Place - 500 Larry Grant - 35 laps
    3. Third Place - 149 John Skinner - 35 laps
    4. Fourth Place - 197 Don Radcliffe - 33 laps
    5. Fifth Place - 580 Richard Ludt - 33 laps
    6. Sixth Place - 21 Dave Misunas - 33 laps
    7. Seventh Place - 1 George Ribeiro - 32 laps
    8. Eighth Place - 28 Jim Harrold  - 32 laps
    9. Ninth Place - 570 Jim Pletcher - 32 laps
    10. Tenth Place - 721 Stan Pleskunas - 31 laps
    11. Eleventh Place - 659 Rob Weaver - 31 laps
    12. Twelfth Place - 211 Stephen Sutley - 31 laps
    13. Thirteenth Place - 427 Jim Van Buren - 28 laps
    14. Fourteenth Place - 537 Keith Farrell - 15 laps
    15. Fifteenth Place - 2 Ron Locke - 4 laps

  • New for 2017 is a Wheeler Marathon scheduled for July 29/30 at Foster City Lake.

  • The Sixth Annual 2017 Bay Area Wheeler Series schedule is now set.  Once again, many thanks to the participating hosting clubs; North Bay RC Sailing Club, San Francisco Model Yacht Club, South Bay Model Yacht Club and Monterey Bay Model Yacht Club.
  • 1st Race - NBRCSC March 19 at the Marin Civic Center
  • 2nd Race - SFMYC June 17 at Spreckles Lake in Golden Gate Park
  • 3rd Race - SBMYC Sept 10 at Lake Cunningham in San Jose

Where Do We Sail?

Pinto Lake

Come Join the members of the Monterey Bay Model Yacht Club for Racing at Pinto Lake in Watsonville, CA for Friday afternoon races between March and November!

Wondering how to get there? Check out the map and details below. We sail to the right of the dock at the south side of the lake.

El Estero

We periodically race at El Estero in beautiful Monterey, CA. These races are announced on the events page.

Location of race starts depends on the wind conditions. With an offshore breeze, we sail on the eastern side of lake off of Cam Aquajito, between the Pearl Street bridge and Del Monte Ave. With an offshore breeze, we sail on the southwest side of the lake, off of Cam El Estero, between Bridge Street and Fremont Street.

Here's more on how to get to El Estero Lake.
